Lost Identity—The Search for Well-being is a short memoir that analyses society’s shortcomings, which result in dire disparities affecting many citizens with disabilities.
In 1987, at the age of four, I was diagnosed with a Medulloblastoma—a type of brain tumour that is most common in children. Only 52 children in the UK are diagnosed each year. Unfortunately, in 1987, I was one of those unlucky 52.
Unfortunate to be diagnosed. Perhaps, but more than fortunate to be here 37 years later to tell my story.
My life has been a journey of hardship, perseverance, triumph, setbacks, and determination, never defined by events that took place years ago.
37 years, wow. To the doctors who said I might never walk again, I proved you wrong. To the doctors who said I had five years to live, I proved you wrong. To the teachers and academics who said I couldn’t achieve academically, I proved you wrong. Additionally, I proved society wrong. I can achieve anything I set my mind to.
My mind is focused on empowering others. You can be reassured. I shall achieve that goal too.
This book is not the end of the story; it’s the start of a new chapter.
